The accretion disk surrounding a supermassive black hole, showing density (left) and temperature (right). The density scale ranges from 1e-12 g/cm^3 to 1e-4 g/cm^3, while the temperature scale extends from 1e6 K to 1e12 K. Initially, a 45 degree tilted disk is initialized in equilibrium, with a weak poloidal magnetic field, around a near maximally spinning (a=15/16) SMBH. The system has a sub-Eddington accretion rate. At the time shown, the magnetorotational instability (MRI) and radiation-mediated angular momentum transport are regulating mass accretion onto the SMBH. General relativistic (GR) effects produce a inner accretion disk that is aligned with the black hole spin, while the outer accretion disk remains misaligned.
